Synopsis: I have taken part in a media project which has required me to design a music magazine for young people; this includes a front cover, contents page and double page spread.

Target audience: My target audience is teenagers and young adults aged from 16 to 24 years old; this magazine is aimed at both a male and female audience because of the age range of my target audience. At 16 years old, both genders are interested in magazines whether its simply to look at the pictures and read some gossip or actually read the magazine cover to cover and find out about new events taking place in the music industry. I think my audience will mainly consist of students with long messy hair, maybe a bit of bright makeup (female), have a knack for skinny jeans, t-shirt, shirts, leather jackets and dresses-because they’re all about being different and standing out.

Photographs: For my front cover photographs I want actor to be on his/her own. I don’t mind if he/she is standing or sitting even. The pose needs to look relaxed but there needs to be some seriousness in the facial expression. I don’t want him/her to look angry, more cool so my target audience will feel attracted to the person on the cover. The front cover image(s) can be taken in M236, with a white backdrop. The contents page pictures are supposed to be more about having fun and showing the bands/musicians in action. I thought I could do with a band image where the vocalist is singing, they are in a recording studio, it would look good if I made sure I had all the band members in this image. The vocalist would be at the front, the guitarist could be standing next to the vocalist. The drummer would be behind them, I could take the shot at a slanting angle from the vocalist’s side, as though the perspective was at the side a little. Another image I thought would be good, it would be interesting to get one of a crowd, so I thought I could have five people in this shot; I would place three of them standing up and the other two people in front on their knees or bending down, all with their hands in the air. They need to look like they were at a gig so I would ask them to look like they were shouting and cheering. I could place a high key light at the left hand side of the group of people, facing more towards the front, but at a slanting angle. And then I would take the picture from the right side of the group, facing them, so the light is directly opposite the camera and we can’t tell how people many are in the image so it could appear to be quite a few. It would be better if the picture was shot from below, just at chest height of the people on the front, maybe. And also above, from in front of the group, so this will give me two images. I also want an image of a male musician, who is to look like he’s in a recording studio too. He needs to be in front of a microphone on a stand, with big headphones on and maybe a few instruments around him; possibly an electric guitar and keyboard. The contents page image can be taken in the music studio with all the equipment for recording and the musical instruments.
I have my interview sorted out, I gave Hayley and Emma a questionnaire to fill in for my interview, the interview is about their upcoming album.

Research: For my article research, I looked at article layouts and topics in NME magazines. The layout for my own article will be recto and verso; I could put the writing on one page, with the main title, then the band image on the other page with a pull quote and the band name. I also looked at various types of font on http://www.dafont.com/ and tried them out on my masthead so I could decide which one to use.

Health and Safety: I don’t want anything extreme in the magazine so its ok for health and safety, the evacuation points in the events of a fire or any other emergency for M236 is the front football pitch and the nearest First Aider is Vicky Rowntree, in M138 or one of the sports staff in SD3.

Production Schedule:
01.04.09-finish all my drafts for the front cover, contents page and double page spread.
24.04.09-Get all of my pictures sorted out.
30.04.09-Finish my front final front cover, at least, and be able to begin my evaluation.
