Bauer
Bauer is an independent magazine company, which was originally a printing house, founded in 1875 by Johann Bauer. Since then Bauer has advanced into a worldwide publishing empire, working with 282 magazines in 15 various countries. The music magazines which co-operate with Bauer are Kerrang, Q, and Mojo.
Kerrang, is heavy metal music magazine. Each issue every week costs £2.20. I think the magazine is aimed at a niche audience because Bauer describes Kerrang’s audience profile as being “individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty.”, this audience would most likely be made up of teenagers and young adults aged from sixteen to twenty-four. The sub genre for the magazine is rock and the primary circulation figures are 52, 272. The figures for how many people actually read the magazine are more than the figures for how many people buy it because some people may just borrow the magazine off somebody who has purchased it. The covers for Kerrang are usually dark and gothic, and the masthead has a crack going through the lettering. This house style would target a male audience specifically, the image of male band members/musicians and gossip is what the girl might read the magazine for. Kerrang does have its own website, music channel and radio station so together, the magazine, radio station and music channel work together to promote each other. This is known as cross media ownership.
Q appears to be a general music magazine, each issue costs £3.50. The target audience, I think, would be a mainstream audience because the magazine does not centre around one particular genre of music nor does it focus completely on music; Q is also about discussing films too. Q has its own website, music channel and radio station to help its promotion. The masthead for Q magazine is simply a white Q in a red box, the connotation of this unique logo connotes what the magazine is about, difference in music. The house style ranges from urban to indie and still keeps a unique sense of style which suits the sub-genres of music the magazine is aimed at.
Mojo is a magazine which focuses more on various genres of rock music, their interests include bands such as The Beatles and Radiohead. They like a unique style in music. It could said that its mainly about classic rock music. Most of Mojo’s target audience is made up of males, probably because of the kind of the music Mojo takes an interest in, bands such The Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols and Oasis will be inspirational to most boys, especially those in a band themselves. Although, apparently, 36% of the audience that purchase the magazine are ‘affluent’. Mojo has an online shop which sells clothing and CD’s, this helps promote the magazine and the website. Mojo has an ABC primary circulation figure of 100, 507!

IPC Media
IPC Media is part of an American company called Time Warner Conglomerate. It is the UK’s most leading publishing magazine; over 26 million adults in the UK read an IPC magazine. Their magazines are distributed abroad as well as over here. A conglomerate is controlled by an umbrella company, in this case Time Warner Conglomerate; we call it this because they own lots of small businesses around the world, all the profit which comes from the smaller companies make comes back to Time Warner Conglomerate.
IPC Media owns music magazines NME (New Musical Express), Guitar and Bass and Uncut.
NME is an alternative/indie music magazine which focuses on new found music; it is a weekly magazine which costs £2.20. As a niche magazine NME targets their audiences with images of bands, they target girls by putting attractive male band members/musicians in the magazine and adding the latest gossip. I think boys can get drawn in more by the interviews and the house style of the magazine as well the pictures. Their house style is simple and unique throughout the whole magazine; it feels as though the design is more a unisex design. NME also have a website, radio station and music channel on Sky.
Guitar and Bass is a rock music magazine, various sub-genres of rock music that is, however, it only focus only musical equipment. It aimed at a male audience and reaches its target audience through the house colours used on the cover, the images of musical instruments. It communicates and involves the audience by taking in their suggestions and ideas. Guitar and Bass is available worldwide, and costs £3.95, it issues every month and I think it is a niche magazine. Guitar and Bass have their own website which helps promote the magazine.
Uncut appears to be a magazine dedicated to rock music and films. It costs £4.30 per issue and is comes out monthly. The target audience for
Uncut would males, the colours appear to be masculine; they are dark, black and white. It is a niche magazine. Uncut has its own website which not only promotes its magazine but links to the NME website too. Uncut’s circulation figure is 87, 069.
According to the circulation figures, out of the magazines for which I have managed to find them, it appears that Mojo is one of the biggest selling magazines which is really good considering they don’t do a music channel or radio station, but I guess that makes buying the magazine more worth it.
